Designer Drugs

On September 26, 2012, Sons of Anarchy star, Johnny Lewis killed his landlandy and her cat before taking his own life. Blamed for the tragedy was a drug called 2C-I, which had also killed another teenager the night before.

2C-I, nicknamed "Smiles," is the latest designer drug in circulation. This follows a long line of other synthetic drugs, including ecstasy, synthetic marijuana, bath salts and methamphetamine that are ruining lives.

.

2C-I,is short for 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenethylamine and is part of a class of synthetic drugs, discovered by Alexander Shulgin, the 'designer drug' guru.

Shulgin published the formulas for his drugs in a 1991 book called PiHKAL: A Chemical Love Story.

As of this year, 2C-I, became a Schedule I controlled substance. A dangerous drug with no known medical use. It is illegal to manufacture or distribute the drug. But, illegality does not make it even difficult to obtain.

Smiles or 2C-I is sold as a white powder or compressed into a tablet. It is sometimes mixed with chocolate to hide its menace.

2C-I is a psychedelic phenethylamine belonging to the 2C family of drugs.

It is a hallucinogenic like LSD, psilocybin, and peyote mushrooms.  Like them 2C-I interferes with serotonin in the brain.
